Making The Most of Your Family Portrait
It's that time of year again when the weather starts to warm up and people start thinking about having a family portrait taken. Why not? Spring, Summer and Fall provide an excellent time to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings that make for a perfect portrait. I am often asked during my pre-portrait consultations an important question. "What do we wear?" After going through all of the hard work of gathering family members from near and far and juggling everyone's different schedules with work, school and family, it's hard enough just to "show up" I'm told.

Believe it or not, clothing choice for your family portrait can make the difference between a group shot and a beautiful family heirloom. In any portrait session, especially with families, you want the attention on the person(s) and not the clothing for a more classic and timeless look. We want to achieve something that will look good hanging in your home may years down the road. If you take the time to choose the perfect clothing, it will create a kind of harmony and work for you, not against you. With that in mind, keep it simple and remember that solid colors are best. Avoid patterns, stripes and bold colors. If there is more than one person in the portrait, the first choice is to match them exactly (Khaki pants and blue jean shirts are one example). The next suggestion is to color coordinate with the same or similar colors (Earth tones work nicely with the outdoor fall sessions). These are guidelines, so discuss all of your options prior to your next professional portrait session to get the portrait you've always dreamed of!
